Artist Statement - Astigmatic Variations

“Astigmatic Variations” is an intersection of two experimental ideas. Stockwell captured images with six-second exposures while toying with conventional photographic technique and composition standards. In this series, Stockwell sought novelty and chance opportunities to evoke thoughts and feelings driven by the aesthetics of visual imperfection.
Utilizing infrared image capture, Stockwell infuses familiar scenes with a disorienting strangeness. Through textured overlays, the artist explores accidents and surprises.
The work is seriously playful and Stockwell intends for images to be interpretive rather than literal.
